The Balance of Nature

A fine line of opposites in balance

Using multiple layers of translucent oil paints, Shelley Hall creates depth and texture in her paintings with an orderly sense of space. Using nature as inspiration, the paintings are divided into distinct and separate spaces, highlighting the differences between the organic and fluid structure of nature and the bold, geometric expanse of pure color. Shelley Hall uses multiple layers, beginning with pencil and charcoal drawings and eventually buildingup translucent layers of paint, creating depth in the work, with hidden words, imagery and symbolism embedded intothe work. The black and white landscapes coexist next to the bold, artificial expanse of color.

“I have always been interested in the idea of opposites in nature” says Hall. “I am fascinated by the idea of layers and complexity, with hidden elements, like an archeological dig. The idea that surface is only one layer, and what is beneath the surface may be more interesting and full of meaning is very interesting to me.” Shelley Hall has been exhibiting and selling her paintings in Galleries and non-profit arts organizations since 1993, including Solo and group exhibitions. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States. In 2005 Shelley and her family moved to Bend Oregon and she now works fulltime as an art appraiser and professional artist. In 2006 She became accredited with the International Society of Appraisers.
